Synopsis
## Yu Yu Hakusho
*Yu Yu Hakusho* is a genre-defining supernatural shounen manga by Yoshihiro Togashi — the same creator who later made *Hunter x Hunter* — serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1994 and collected into 19 volumes over 175 chapters. One of the most beloved manga and anime of the 1990s, it pioneered many of the tournament arc conventions and supernatural action tropes that would define decades of shounen manga to follow. Togashi's sharp wit, morally complex characters, and tendency to subvert expectations give it a quality that feels ahead of its time.
Yusuke Urameshi is a delinquent middle schooler with no academic prospects and a violent reputation — not exactly the type anyone would call a hero. Yet when he spontaneously throws himself in front of a car to save a small child, his selfless death shocks even the Spirit World, who hadn't expected it. Given a chance to return to life as a Spirit Detective tasked with investigating supernatural crimes in the human world, Yusuke is reborn with new powers and an unlikely team of allies: his rival-turned-friend Kazuma Kuwabara, the cold fox demon Kurama, and the volatile fire demon Hiei. Together they battle demons, corrupt spirit world officials, and other supernatural threats across increasingly high-stakes missions, culminating in the Dark Tournament — one of the most celebrated tournament arcs in manga history. Togashi's character work is exceptional: Yusuke grows from a purposeless punk into a genuine hero without losing his roughness, while Kurama and Hiei are among the most complex antiheroes in 90s manga. The series also features an extraordinary final arc that deliberately deconstructs its own tournament format.
