Synopsis

## Alice in Borderland *Alice in Borderland* (*Imawa no Kuni no Alice*) by Haro Aso is a gripping survival-thriller manga that reimagines Lewis Carroll's Wonderland as a brutal death-game set in an alternate version of Tokyo. Serialized in *Weekly Shōnen Sunday* from 2010 to 2016, the 18-volume series gained a massive second wave of readers after Netflix's acclaimed live-action adaptation and is one of the most pulse-pounding survival manga ever published. Ryōhei Arisu is a directionless young man in Tokyo, obsessed with video games and unable to figure out what to do with his life. One evening, after watching fireworks with his two closest friends, they duck into a subway bathroom to avoid the crowds — and when they emerge, Tokyo is completely empty. No people. No noise. Just an abandoned megacity and the distant sound of the fireworks still burning. They quickly discover the terrifying truth: this is the "Borderland," a parallel version of Tokyo where survival means playing deadly games organized around a deck of playing cards. Each card suit represents a different type of game: clubs test cooperation and teamwork, diamonds test intelligence and strategy, hearts test psychological endurance and manipulation, and spades test raw physical ability. Completing games earns "visas" that extend the players' lives; failing to play or losing means death. Arisu, who has always excelled at games but lacked a reason to live, finds himself paradoxically the most capable person in an environment where his particular skills mean the difference between life and death. As he uncovers the Borderland's secrets, the games escalate toward a final confrontation with the Joker and the question of whether any of them can ever go home. Aso's manga is renowned for its intricate game designs and its willingness to kill beloved characters.
