Synopsis

## Soul Eater *Soul Eater* is Atsushi Ohkubo's 113-chapter dark fantasy manga, serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2003 to 2013 and collected into 25 volumes. The manga distinguished itself from its anime adaptation with a fully original ending and a darker, more complex final arc — making it essential reading even for fans who have already watched the show. It remains one of the most stylish and inventive shonen manga ever produced. At the Death Weapon Meister Academy, located in a city built around a giant clock and overseen by Death (the Shinigami) himself, students pair as meisters and weapons to hunt down evil human souls threatening to become kishin — demonic beings that could plunge the world into madness. Maka Albarn and her scythe-partner Soul Evans aim to collect 99 kishin souls and one witch's soul to forge the perfect Death Scythe. Alongside the extravagant ninja Black Star and his weapon Tsubaki, and the obsessively symmetry-obsessed Death the Kid with twin pistols Liz and Patty, they battle escalating threats — from rogue witches to the ancient kishin Asura awakening from his imprisonment beneath the school. Ohkubo's manga features a unique gothic visual style, clever power system design, and a climactic final arc that diverges substantially from the anime adaptation, making the manga a distinct and rewarding experience. The series preceded Ohkubo's later work *Fire Force (Enen no Shouboutai)*, which shares thematic DNA with *Soul Eater*.
