Synopsis
## Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
*Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic* is a criminally underrated shounen adventure that debuted in Fall 2012 — A-1 Pictures' richly animated adaptation of Shinobu Ohtaka's manga set in a world inspired by the tales of *One Thousand and One Nights*. Its 25-episode first season builds an extraordinary fantasy world with genuine political complexity, memorable characters, and a magic system rooted in mythology, making it one of the most intellectually ambitious action series of the 2010s.
Aladdin is a cheerful, mysterious boy who carries a strange flute housing the spirit of a Djinn and possesses immense magical power he doesn't fully understand. Venturing out into the world for the first time, he befriends Alibaba — a young merchant dreaming of conquering a Dungeon to claim its treasure and his own destiny. Dungeons are massive, labyrinthine structures that appear suddenly across the world, each ruled by a powerful Djinn; those who conquer a Dungeon receive a Metal Vessel imbued with the Djinn's power, making them candidates for king. Together with the fierce slave warrior Morgiana, Aladdin and Alibaba travel through a world that mirrors the grandeur and intrigue of ancient Persia, Arabia, and the Silk Road — encountering corrupt nobles, revolutionary organizations, and the enigmatic organization Al-Thamen, which seeks to plunge the world into chaos. Ohtaka's world-building goes far beyond typical shounen fare, weaving themes of slavery, political revolution, destiny, and the nature of good and evil into thrilling battles and genuinely surprising narrative turns.
