Synopsis
## Golden Kamuy
**Golden Kamuy** (ゴールデンカムイ) is a 2018 anime television series produced by Geno Studio, adapted from Satoru Noda's manga. Set in Hokkaido, Japan's northern frontier, in the early 20th century during the Meiji era, the series is a uniquely genre-blending work — part gory survival thriller, part buddy road trip comedy, part meticulous documentary of Ainu indigenous culture. Its combination of extreme violence, genuine warmth, absurdist humor, and careful ethnographic detail makes it one of the most unusual anime of the decade.
Saichi Sugimoto, nicknamed "Immortal Sugimoto" for surviving the Russo-Japanese War through sheer bloody-mindedness, is living rough in Hokkaido after the war, hoping to find gold to support his fallen comrade's widow. He learns of a massive hidden fortune: the life savings of an entire Ainu community, stolen and hidden somewhere in the wilderness by a now-imprisoned man. The location is encoded in a set of tattoos spread across the skins of escaped convicts from Abashiri Prison. Sugimoto's quest brings him into alliance with Asirpa, a resourceful young Ainu girl whose father may be connected to the gold. Together they hunt convicts and navigate a murderous three-way race against the Hokkaido Development Bureau and a faction of rogue soldiers — all while the series lovingly depicts Ainu food, language, and customs with extraordinary care.
