Synopsis
## Darker than Black
*Darker than Black* (*Kuro no Keiyakusha*) is Studio Bones' atmospheric sci-fi noir masterwork — a 25-episode thriller that layers espionage, moral ambiguity, and supernatural mystery into a uniquely stylish whole.
Ten years ago, two mysterious phenomena appeared simultaneously: Hell's Gate in Tokyo and Heaven's Gate in South America. Since then, Contractors have emerged — humans who gained supernatural powers at the cost of their emotions, bound to perform strange remuneration payments after each use of their ability. The sky's stars are no longer real; each one represents a Contractor. Among them is Hei, codenamed BK201 and nicknamed the Black Reaper, an exceptionally powerful Contractor who works for a mysterious organization called the Syndicate. What sets *Darker than Black* apart is its episodic two-part story structure, each mini-arc told from the perspective of peripheral characters who orbit Hei, gradually revealing the larger conspiracy. The series is praised for its tone, visual style, and morally complex approach to a world where power strips humanity away — except in Hei, who refuses to let it.
