Synopsis
## Legend of the Galactic Heroes
**Legend of the Galactic Heroes** (銀河英雄伝説, *Ginga Eiyū Densetsu*) is a 110-episode OVA series produced from 1988 to 1997 by Kitty Films and Artland, based on the novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka. It is one of the highest-rated anime in history and widely considered the pinnacle of space opera storytelling in the medium — a sweeping, Tolstoyan drama of war, politics, ideology, and leadership on a scale few works of any kind have attempted.
For 150 years, humanity has been locked in an endless war between two interstellar powers: the autocratic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance. The story follows two military geniuses who emerge on opposite sides. For the Empire, Reinhard von Lohengramm is a brilliant young admiral who ascends through the ranks through sheer tactical genius and burning ambition, dreaming of reshaping human civilization. For the Alliance, Yang Wen-li is a reluctant genius — a historian who became a soldier, who wins every battle he enters and wants only to retire and read books. Their duel of wits plays out across decades, entire political systems, the lives of hundreds of secondary characters, and some of the most spectacular large-scale space battles ever depicted in animation. The show is less about combat than about governance, philosophy, and what kind of future humanity deserves.
