Synopsis
## Ergo Proxy
**Ergo Proxy** is a 2006 original anime television series produced by Manglobe, directed by Shukō Murase. A dense, philosophically ambitious work drawing on Gnostic mythology, existentialism, and cyberpunk aesthetics, it remains one of the most visually distinctive and intellectually demanding anime of the 2000s. The series is heavily influenced by thinkers including Derrida, Lacan, and Husserl, and weaves their ideas into a bleak, beautifully rendered post-apocalyptic world.
In the domed city of Romdo, humanity survives alongside humanoid robots called AutoReivs following a global ecological catastrophe that rendered the outside world uninhabitable. Inspector Re-l Mayer of the Citizen Intelligence Bureau investigates a series of murders committed by AutoReivs infected with the "Cogito Virus" — a pathogen that grants them self-awareness. Her investigation leads her to Vincent Law, a quiet immigrant worker, and to monstrous superhuman beings called Proxies who exist beyond the dome. Forced outside the city with Vincent and a young AutoReiv named Pino, Re-l discovers that Romdo's utopia was built on hidden atrocities, and that the god-like Proxies are bound up with the truth of human survival itself. What follows is a journey across a ruined world that strips away every layer of manufactured reality to reach something more disturbing underneath.
